So the hubbie has finally found a couple of things he doesn't like about Australia. The first one is actually something I totally agree with him on: there are a disturbing number of people who go around in public without shoes on! Not just at the beach, where being shoe-less is completely acceptable and normal, but in shopping malls and anywhere else! We can't figure out why - are they so poor they can't afford a pair of thongs/flip flops?! I mean really, it is just disgusting to think of what they are walking in and then bringing into their houses. ugh. But maybe this is just my mum's cleaning OCD wearing off on me. I certainly don't remember this many people doing this before I left!
Now, the other transgression is a much more serious complaint from my husband - one that causes him much swearing and consternation. And one that will not change any time soon. It's something that all Aussies have accepted as it being "just the way things are", probably because we don't know any different! Yes, this terrible, terrible thing is: shopping trolleys. Specifically, that all four wheels on our trolleys move which makes them comically difficult to steer successfully. The heavier the load is in them, the more wayward they are. Poor dear, he'll soon learn the artful dance of trolley steering that every Aussie learns - handed down from generation to generation there is a fine balance to pushing and pulling 50kg of groceries in a trolley that acts like a car on black ice. He'll catch on soon enough I'm sure. And by then maybe he'll have a more substantive complaint about Australia! I think things are looking pretty good if this is his biggest problem with the place :)
